At Haider Family Dentistry, our dentist Dr. Jeremy Haider and our dental team offer a range of general and cosmetic dentistry services at our office in Salem, Oregon, including dentures. A number of different types of dentures are available, and unlike older models, modern dentures are designed for a better fit and look more natural.
Tips for adjusting to your new dentures
Getting used to dentures can take some time. Dentures are designed to provide as comfortable and natural a fit as possible, but it’s normal for there to be an adjustment period as you become comfortable wearing them and performing normal activities like eating and speaking. Here are a few tips to help you adapt to your new dentures.
Follow your dentist’s instructions
It might sound obvious, but if you have one or more extractions before getting your dentures, following your post-op instructions is very important to make sure your gums heal properly so your dentures fit comfortably and securely.
Some types of dentures may become loose over time, and you may need periodic adjustments. Keep all of your follow-up appointments, and let your dentist know if you have any issues with how your dentures fit.
Get some practice time
Often the biggest adjustments after getting dentures are learning to eat and speak comfortably, which takes some practice. To get used to speaking with your new dentures, try reading out loud or singing for a few minutes every day until they feel comfortable and natural.
Adjust your diet as needed
You can certainly continue eating the foods you love after getting dentures, but you might have to make slight modifications at first until you’re used to chewing and biting. Start out with softer foods in the first week or two after getting your dentures as your mouth adjusts.
More saliva production is common after getting dentures. If you notice that you’re producing more saliva than usual, eating something like saltine crackers or a single-serving container of applesauce can help. Make sure to carry a supply around with you at work or as you go about your day.
