Dental Implant Restorations Q & A

What is a dental implant?

Implants are metal posts inserted into your jawbone to replace missing teeth. An abutment is then placed on top of the post. And finally, a crown is placed on the abutment. Implants are considered a superior treatment to dentures as they are sturdy, don’t slip, and promote bone health. Replacing missing teeth is important so you can maintain the shape and function of your mouth.

Implants are often more comfortable for people who have sore gums, an excessive gag reflex, or gum irregularities. At Haider Family Dentistry, Dr. Haider offers crowns and bridges that simulate natural teeth. Crowns are sturdy and match the look of your smile.

What are crowns and bridges?

Crowns are tooth-colored, prosthetic teeth that are usually made of durable porcelain. They’re crafted from a mold or image of your existing teeth to fit your mouth exactly. They’re customized in terms of color, too, so your smile is naturally restored in look and function.

If you have a few missing teeth in a row, there are solutions for that, too. Implants may be placed on either side of a space, or you might have a bridge attached on one side to a natural tooth and to an implant on the other side.

Crowns are then affixed along with a bridge between these crowns to complete the restoration. An advantage to implant supported bridges is that your existing teeth do not have to be ground down to accept the crown that holds the bridge.

When can implant restorations be placed?

Placing the post in your jawbone will be done in a separate dental office. You may need several weeks or months to heal from the post-implantation. Your jawbone also needs time to grow around the implant and create a sturdy, secure foundation.

Dr. Haider will evaluate your mouth with a physical exam and X-rays to determine the right time to apply the restorations. In the meantime, you’ll have a temporary crown or bridges so you can eat and speak normally.
